What a wonderful time at the NBIF golf tournament with family, old friends and new ones. The best fun, people, food, hospitality and all for a GREAT cause. Thank you to all who came out in support.

Our buddy James for organizing the entire event. He is one of the most amazing, true-blue, caring people one could ever meet.

Holland Heights Golf Course for their hospitality and beautiful grounds. We look forward to many years of golfing with them.

Karen and Candy for being the cutest most attentive volunteers. Thank goodness they were there to keep us hydrated. It was a HOT one!

Wal-Mart, Klein's All Sports, Price Chopper and Blue Dragon Screenprinting for all the generous donations.

Still trying to think if we want Debbie back next year - lol. She won every award: team, closest to the pin, longest drive and even a raffle at the end. She is a true athlete in every game she plays. This is a person you want on your team not only in game, but also in friendship.

I could not end this note without the mention of Shannon. She drove a golf cart into a real deep ditch. They were rescued and given another cart. Even though scratched up and battered she (and her team) drove on and played the game. What a trooper!

This instructional video offers useful tips for effective communication and for directing individuals, families, and loved ones to needed supports and services. The training is ideal for healthcare professionals, educators, policy makers, family members, and friends who want to understand the issues that challenge individuals with brain injury. Cafe Plus opened in 1996 as a place for head-injured survivors in the Central New York area to relax, do some meaningful activities, and have a good time with others. Too often, survivors feel isolated and left out of society after being seriously injured in car wrecks, falls, industrial accidents, sports mishaps, or assaults, then spending months or even years in recovery. As a result, many head-injured survivors experience a loss of identity and lowered self-esteem.

The purpose of this coffee shop is to help people combat feelings of isolation and assist them in re-connecting socially and make friendships. The people in the Central New York area have responded with over 5000 visitors and about 15 to 20 or so people coming each week.

The Defense Department hopes to find a better treatment for the 100,000 troops who have been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury since 2003, and it's looking at hyperbaric chambers — often used in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning — for the answer.

Although there have been studies looking at the impact these pressurized oxygen chambers have on TBI patients, none has been able to definitively answer whether hyperbaric oxygen can reduce or eliminate chronic symptoms of TBI such as headaches, memory loss and mood swings. Important to this discussion was the positive collaborations we have made over the past few years and the desire to nurture these connections, joining with others to advocate for choice, equality, and independence in our lives.

Informing the group of the efforts of the KCAC in the past several months, of who and what this kind of advocacy represents ~ and will mean now and in the future, inspired members of the NBIF to want to join their voices in unison and support of, for, and with others that have joined the coalition.

Mount Sinai Seeks Participants for Facebook Study

How much do you know about Facebook? Would you be willing to answer a few questions about how familiar and interested you are in using Facebook?

The Brain Injury Research Center at Mount Sinai is conducting a research study to explore how often people with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) use Facebook. The research will include participants over 18 years old, and have sustained a TBI. Interested participants will be invited to access and complete an online survey. The survey is anonymous and takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. There is no compensation for participation.

I have lived with a brain injury for nearly 20 years and have worked in the field for nearly 15 of those years. Raised in a civil rights family I am very much an advocate for every individual’s right to be who they are, in safety, with equality, in the world they live in. When I talk with survivors of brain injuries in this state and others, the number one complaint I hear is, "They treat us like we are children." Tragically this is true....
