New period of brain 'plasticity' created with transplanted embryonic cells

UCSF scientists report that they were able to prompt a new period of "plasticity," or capacity for change, in the neural circuitry of the visual cortex of juvenile mice. The approach, they say, might some day be used to create new periods of plasticity in the human brain that would allow for the repair of neural circuits following injury or disease. Read on...

Hyperbaric chamber may treat traumatic brain injury

The Defense Department hopes to find a better treatment for the 100,000 troops who have been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury since 2003, and it's looking at hyperbaric chambers — often used in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning — for the answer.

Although there have been studies looking at the impact these pressurized oxygen chambers have on TBI patients, none has been able to definitively answer whether hyperbaric oxygen can reduce or eliminate chronic symptoms of TBI such as headaches, memory loss and mood swings. A new clinical trial, which is expected to begin in January 2011, is designed to do just that. More

Cognition is the act of knowing or thinking. It includes the ability to choose, understand, remember and use information. Cognition includes:

Attention and concentration.
Processing and understanding information.
Memory.
Communication.
Planning, organizing, and assembling.
Reasoning, problem-solving, decision-making, and judgment.
Controlling impulses and desires and being patient.
How does TBI affect cognition and what can be done about it?

After a TBI it is common for people to have problems with attention, concentration, speech and language, learning and memory, reasoning, planning and problem-solving.

Kahrmann Consumer Advocacy Coalition (KCAC)

Members of the NBIF met to discuss future plans, meeting our mission to grow, moving into a new location to meet our need...as we continue to grow.

Important to this discussion was the positive collaborations we have made over the past few years and the desire to nurture these connections, joining with others to advocate for choice, equality, and independence in our lives.

Informing the group of the efforts of the KCAC in the past several months, of who and what this kind of advocacy represents ~ and will mean now and in the future, inspired members of the NBIF to want to join their voices in unison and support of, for, and with others that have joined the coalition.
