True Life With Traumatic Brain Injury
Yes, it took me almost 20 years to be able to say it, but I have a traumatic brain injury. I am head-injured. There’s really nothing wrong with saying it, but for the first five years or so, I was not willing to tell people the reason I’m a little different. More

Please Meet NBIF’s Friend David Listowski (CafĂ© Plus Syracuse, NY)
Cafe Plus opened in 1996 as a place for head-injured survivors in the Central New York area to relax, do some meaningful activities, and have a good time with others. Too often, survivors feel isolated and left out of society after being seriously injured in car wrecks, falls, industrial accidents, sports mishaps, or assaults, then spending months or even years in recovery. As a result, many head-injured survivors experience a loss of identity and lowered self-esteem.
The purpose of this coffee shop is to help people combat feelings of isolation and assist them in re-connecting socially and make friendships. The people in the Central New York area have responded with over 5000 visitors and about 15 to 20 or so people coming each week.

Right Versus Left Hemispheric Injury

Every acquired brain injury is unique. The location and degree of injury may vary with each incident. Most acquired brain injuries involve multiple deficits. When we look at homonymous hemianopsia patients, we discover differences in the patient's struggle related to the unique functions that each of the two hemispheres of the brain perform. More

The Facts About Traumatic Brain Injury (Part 1)
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain caused by trauma (e.g., fall, sports injury, car accident, surgery, etc.) or from a loss of oxygen (e.g., suffocation or drowning). Often a TBI is not visible, but it may have effects on one’s physical, emotional, mental and social life. Long-term effects often place an enormous emotional and financial strain on the affected and their families. The high cost of medical and other ancillary services as well as time involvement can be very taxing to those directly and indirectly involved. Get the facts here

Man defies odds to earn black belt

After being involved in a horrific car accident at the age of 12, doctors didn’t expect Danny Campbell to live. The Great Kills resident not only survived, but he has overcome the lengthy, painstaking rehabilitation procedures, putting a punctuation mark on that recovery when he earned a black belt in karate early last month. For the rest of this inspiring story...
Defense.gov News Article: Services Improve Diagnosis of Brain Injuries, PTSD
“There were concerns early in the conflicts that members suffering PTSD or TBI might be separated under the non-compensable, exclusive diagnosis of a personality disorder,” Rice said in testimony before the House Armed Services Committee’s military personnel subcommittee. “Such concerns were reasonable, given our nascent understanding of these signature injuries.”

50 Best Blogs for Neurology Students
The workings and nuances of the human body understandably fascinates almost everyone, but only a (comparative) handful of individuals channel that curiosity into passion. And the passion, in turn, into a medical career. Neurologists, neuroscientists, and their contemporaries in cognitive psychology, science, and/or development narrow their focus to – of course – the nervous system. Most of them tend to emphasize the brain over the other elements due to its status as one of the most essential organs for survival and fascinating complexity fraught with unexplored nooks and crannies. New period of brain 'plasticity' created with transplanted embryonic cells
UCSF scientists report that they were able to prompt a new period of "plasticity," or capacity for change, in the neural circuitry of the visual cortex of juvenile mice. The approach, they say, might some day be used to create new periods of plasticity in the human brain that would allow for the repair of neural circuits following injury or disease. Read on...
Hyperbaric chamber may treat traumatic brain injury
The Defense Department hopes to find a better treatment for the 100,000 troops who have been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury since 2003, and it's looking at hyperbaric chambers — often used in cases of carbon monoxide poisoning — for the answer.
Although there have been studies looking at the impact these pressurized oxygen chambers have on TBI patients, none has been able to definitively answer whether hyperbaric oxygen can reduce or eliminate chronic symptoms of TBI such as headaches, memory loss and mood swings. A new clinical trial, which is expected to begin in January 2011, is designed to do just that. More
